black sand/magnetite

Post  solomon levi on Thu Dec 25, 2008 4:36 am

My friend and I did a lye burn on some magnetite today - 1/4 cup magnetite to
1-1/8th cup sodium hydroxide. It melted pretty nicely for 1/2 hour.
Doesn't look like oatmeal though. I'll let you know what becomes of it - how much
m-state we get. Volcanic sand is supposed to produce m-3: iridium, rhodium and gold.
I have to boil it for a few hours and then swing the pH.
